New Details Emerge on Killing of Israeli Man in Hungary

Two local men beat the 40-year-old to death with bricks

Hungarian police released details about the death of 40-year old Ofir Gross, whose body was found on May 1, ten days after he was beaten to death by bricks by two local men in Tiszakécske, a small central Hungarian town. According to police, they murdered him for his laptop and mobile phone.

Gross, who was studying medical engineering in Germany came to the Central Hungarian town of Kecskemét, 85km from Budapest, on March 1st, where he stayed at a flat, he found on an online home rental website. After six weeks, he left his place and went to Tiszakécske, a small town 35km east of Kecskemét.

The Israeli tourist could not find a place to stay in the town and he pitched his tent near the railway station. There was a camping in town, but the 40-year old choose not to go there, according to local police. 

During his stay near the railway station, Gross was approached by police, who checked his identity and on April 21 a local officer, with good English informed him about loding options in town and told him about the location of the police station, just in case he needed information and help, Col. Vendel Szabó told local online news portal baon.hu. There was no information why Gross chose Tiszakécske, a town offering not many tourists attractions. Gross had money, food, laptop, and a phone and he regularly contacted his family, Mr Szabó said.

Gross get acquianted with two men, aged 21 and 19 on the 22nd of April at a local pub near the railway station, who offered him a place to stay for the night. A guest in the pub helped in with translation.

One of the suspects, 21-year old Károly N., was held for burglary and was released from prison a few weeks before the murder.
