What Happened in Budapest?

Short chronicle of the first week of September in Hungary

A deep refugee crisis at Keleti station, clashes over the Hungarian politics, riot of the ultras, marching migrants, bus convoy, closed borders, open borders. It's even difficult to list last week's extraordinary events of the Hungarian capital.

Over the Net: What Everymen Think about the Crisis

The Hungarian migrant crisis made the world internet users to share their opinion widely. Let's see some of the most interesting comments of the English-speaking world.

ANDY: “This is Germany's and Europe's 21st Century Trojan Horse!”
Bryan: “Merkel is doing the opposite of what Hitler did. Perhaps she feels Germany's world view needs improvement. This move by Merkel will certainly be a significant strain on Germany's economy...not to mention when the terrorists rise up that'll be a whole other problem. I see this as an example of a negative impact of culture mixing.”
Celia: “Listen to the British people's demand now Mr Cameron – REFERENDUM NOW THIS MONTH THIS YEAR 2015!!!!!”
Commenter: “The euphoria of Germany's guilt driven embrace of the Muslim migrants is fading quickly. Merkel is beginning to realize the political, economic and cultural consequences of her actions. Her EU 'partners' will not quickly come to her aid.”
delta: “Europe is committing suicide.”
Ernie: “How many are the Americans taking?”
Grape: “It is against the Koran to assimilate into another culture, and abide by their government.”
hearmeout: “What's wrong with the safe country they're already in????”
Jacqueline: “What will Merkel's legacy be after this debacle? It rather stretches the imagination to visualise Germany's future. Even the immediate future. Thousand upon thousand of migrants from a completely different culture. They will need to learn the difficult language that is German, they need so much that is material and their religion is incomprehensible to Europeans.”
Jeff: “What's Germany and the rest of Europe going to do, when they keep on coming, and coming? Ultimately I suspect it will result in countries closing their borders and the end of Schengen. Any sympathy I had for these asylum seekers evaporated when they started sitting down in railway tracks and demanding that they be taken to Germany, and then presumably they will demand as refugees their rights to bring their families, housing etc – That is not the sign of a refugee – it's the sign of an economic migrant.”
Jhay-B: “It will be simpler and cheaper for the Europeans to band together and go after ISIS than integrate these refugees in their countries.”
June: “Merkel has now become to realize. Hello. Too late now. I have been thinking if Cameron says he is only going to take peoples from the camps in Turkey.”
Moe H: “Why aren't these people going to other Muslim countries? Muslim is really not a religion like Christianity. It is an authoritarian ideology, such as fascism or communism. People are not allowed to leave Islam for other religions.”
PaBroon: “European countries no longer have control of their borders and that is madness in itself.”
PoP Goes Da Skittles: “This is no less than an invasion.”
Rockstar5: “Like watching a horror movie in slow motion! We are sitting ducks, so vulnerable!”
The-Commentator: “This will end in tears.”
Tom S: „Merkel is the most power, most dangerous person in Europe. She must be an absolute idiot to not see the immense threat posed to Europe by allowing these migrants to flow in unchecked.”
Toula: “The Oktoberfest is starting shortly in Bavaria. Downtown Munich, especially in front of the train station looks like Beirut or Cairo. The number of wondering African and Asian migrants is shocking.”

To tell the truth, the story is not as sunny as what happened with Cameron Diaz in Las Vegas. However, Budapest had the same temperature, especially in the political tone, the migrant crisis, its EU law obstacles and the allover media hysteria is not a silver linings playbook.

So let's start with the beginning. Until exactly a week ago, Hungary wanted to do everything in its power to keep Schengen and Dublin laws, so register migrants and let go to travel further only real refugees and not economic migrants. As international media hysteria escalated saying the Hungarian government should be more “human”, it allowed a large numbers to board trains to Vienna on their way to Germany.

In return, the Austrian government made furious announcements that Hungary hadn't kept its obligations. So the Hungarian police tried to prevent migrants from boarding trains on Tuesday and Wednesday causing some scuffles. Almost rioting situations also happened among migrants because they couldn't understand Schengen laws doesn't allow people to travel to EU countries without valid VISA and papers, even though they have tickets to international train lines.

Thursday, the events continued exactly the same as the previous day, more migrants arriving to Keleti and refusing to go to migrant camps where they could have gotten food and shelter but they would have been registered.

And then Friday came, the day when European politics changed. First, ultras came to Keleti stations to fight with migrants but the Hungarian police prevented the serious attack. Afterwards, migrants felt to be fed up with waiting, so they started to follow a few speakers marching on the M1 motorway and rail lines. So overall 1200 migrants started to go on foot to the Austrian border blocking the country's main transport lines. At the 9 PM, Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office Janos Lazar announced that the government would send around 100 buses would pick up thousands of migrants camped in front of Keleti station and the other marching on the main highway to Vienna. He also stated that the decision was made without the Austrian government as they couldn't reach chancellor Werner Faymann.

The Austrian Twitter was instantly filled with #FaymannGehAnsTelefon, meaning Faymann, you should pick up the phone. Mr Faymann later announced that they opened the Austrian border because of the “emergency situation on the Hungarian border”.

Migrants arrived safely to the Austrian border town, Nickelsdorf where they could follow their journey basically without any registration to Germany. Still, around 700 refugees, including children, had to spend their night under open the sky as Austrian officials couldn't provide enough beds and shelter.

On Saturday, a second march started but the Hungarian officials, acting in unison with Austria and Germany, opened the railway, so migrants could travel without the Schengen-ordered VISA.

Sunday, migrants still flowed over the border, many of them with the help of an Austrian convoy, titled #carsofhope on Twitter. The influx resulted furious comments of Germany that Mr Orban lied about the amount of refugees, promising only a few thousand, when 13000 migrants arrived in two days in Munich in reality.

Now Ms Merkel and Mr Faymann start to talk about the importance of Schengen and Dublin laws, saying the weekend's “extraordinary measures” should be returned to normal conditions. In other words, it's possible that Austria soon closes its border again. Meanwhile 10000 migrants are on their way in Macedonia and Serbia, and thousands arrive every day in Greece.
